Stephenville vs. Glen Rose

The Jackets entered their bye week on a high note by taking the previous #10 4A team down in impressive fashion. The wet conditions would seem to favor the run heavy Sandies coming into the game but it was Stephenville who racked up big numbers on the ground and through the air. The game appeared to be headed for a shootout as both teams scored 14 points in the 1st quarter. But Stephenville made some adjustments and dominated the rest of the way with 28 unanswered points. It was a quality win against a good 4A opponent. Most importantly the Jackets got through non-district healthy with the exception of Nick Pack who was injured in the Monterrey game.

A Texas high school football season has 3 seasons in itself. The first one is non-district. This is where teams find out about themselves and hopefully have any weaknesses exposed and corrected. The second one is district where every game counts towards the goal of making the playoffs. The third is the playoffs where it is win or go home. The goal of every team is to get to the playoffs and win the last game. That goal starts this Friday as your Stephenville Yellow Jackets take on the undefeated Glen Rose Tigers. These two towns are a little under 30 miles apart and this will be the first time they have played in varsity action on the gridiron. The Tigers look to have their best team since they made a quarter-final run in 2007. And some believe this team may be even better than that one. The results so far this year appear to back up those assumptions.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
The Tigers are coached by long time Stephenville assistant Tommy Dunn. I cannot express in words the respect I have on a personal level for Coach Dunn. He came to Stephenville the year I entered the 7th grade in 1987. He spent two years at the Jr. High and moved up to high school the same time I did. I was privileged to be around Coach Dunn for my entire football playing career. He was here for all 4 state championships, he coached under Mike Copeland and Chad Morris. He moved to Glen Rose as the offensive coordinator and was promoted to AD/HC in 2008. He brought with him the up tempo spread attack that Coach Morris ran here with his own twists. He definitely has coached under some great offensive minds. Glen Rose will line up in spread formations but they are very balanced team. The offensive line has good size and has been dominant in most of their games. The Tigers have an outstanding QB in Colton Bretton. Bretton is a big, strong armed young man that has been deadly dealing the ball to his receivers. He has already thrown for 18 touchdown passes through 6 hames. Bretton's favorite target is Justin Weatherley who is averaging 21.5 yards per reception. Weatherley is tall 6'3 and has the speed to burn you deep. The Tigers have a very good running back to compliment their passing attack. Cody Burtscher has been a big play waiting to happen all season. He is averaging nearly 13 yards per rush. This is a very good offense.

Defense
The Tigers have been nearly as impressive on defense as they have on offense. The best of the bunch is defensive lineman Jared Thames. Thames has been described to me as a beast on the football field. The linebackers are very active and will move around giving different looks. Glen Rose will not be afraid to blitz, slant, and stunt and do it often. Burtscher has been very impressive from his safety spot locking down the middle of the field.

Special Teams
Glen Rose has been good to great in special teams play. They have returned 2 punts for touchdowns and blocked 3 kicks. The kicking game has been solid to average..

Prediction

Coach Dunn will have no problem getting his team up for this game. The Jackets must match the Tigers intensity from the opening whistle. Glen Rose will have the most balanced offense Stephenville has seen to date. For Glen Rose to win they will have to get into a shootout with Stephenville and force some opportune turnovers. If the Jackets come out like they have the last 4 games then they will put the Tigers away late 3rd quarter early 4th. Glen Rose has not faced anyone near Stephenville's caliber but they have done what they were suppose to do against inferior teams. This game has me excited.
Stephenville 49 Glen Rose 28

Now for the rest of the 7-4A picks.

Alvarado Indians (5-1) @ Hillsboro Eagles (1-5): With only 5 teams in district 7-3A this is the only other game on the slate with Venus having a bye. The only unknown about this game is how many points will the Indians score. It will be ugly early.
Alvarado 60 Hillsboro 0

Stephenville @ Alvarado

The Glen Rose Tigers gave Stephenville all they wanted last week for 3 1/2 quarters. The Tigers were the first true spread team Stephenville had faced and the Wardogs had a hard time adjusting to the great game plan Glen Rose threw at them. The Tigers just about threw everything at them offensively. Defensively Glen Rose had a hard time stopping the Jacket Machine on offense. They are getting better and better every week which is what the coaches are looking for at this time of year. Stephenville has seen just about every type of offense so far this season and Glen Rose was one of the best. The 3A D2 playoff contenders better watch out, because I believe the Tigers will make some serious noise come playoff time.

The Jackets travel up Hwy 67 this week to take on the Alvarado Indians in their quest for a district championship. Alvarado comes into the showdown with a 6-1 record. Their lone loss was by 1 point to Waco Connally otherwise the Indians have been down right dominant in their other games. Speaking of 1 point that is exactly how many points shy they were from winning a state championship last year. Several players return from that team and the state rankings recognize them with a #8 AP ranking. What else is new this year? The Jackets take on another top 10 ranked team.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
The Indians base out of the power I, and that is just what they want to do, power the football down your throat and make you like it. They will run the ball 80% of the time. Their leading rusher is Lee Hardy. Hardy is a scrappy tough runner. I went and watched Alvarado play FW Southwest and Hardy broke arm tackle after arm tackle. He has a deceivingly strong lower body and keeps those legs churning. The Indians will bring starting FS Marcus McNeil in at tailback for a change of pace. McNeil is more of a slasher with really good speed. The Alvarado fans call them thunder and lightning. Alvarado is very physical up front with 3 of the 5 linemen and the TE returning off of last years state finals team. Although the Indians don't throw often they have a very capable passer in 3 year starter Kenny West at QB.

Defense
The Indians feature the 3-4 defense which Stephenville has seen quite a bit of this year. Much like on the offensive side, Alvarado is very physical. The thing that stood out to me in the Southwest game was how well they tackled. You didn't see many missed tackles at all. The Indians did lose quite a few very good players off of last years team on defense but this bunch has picked up right where last year team left off. Alvarado is led up front Brazos Fuller. Fuller is quick and has a motor that doesn't stop. The LB core as a unit flow to the ball really well and like I said earlier are sure tacklers. The secondary is led by McNeil. He is the best athlete on Alvarado's team in my opinion. McNeil already has 8 INT's on the year. He is the definition of a ball hawk.

Special Teams
The kicking game from what I saw in the Southwest game was average to below average. The Jackets have an advantage here. You do not kick it to #11 on their return teams. The coverage teams are good.

Prediction

Both teams will need to make sure their ice machines are full Saturday morning as this will be a very physical ball game. Alvarado will try to shorten the game and keep the ball away from the vaunted Jacket offense with their smash mouth ball control offense. The two very good running teams Stephenville has faced so far were not able to consistently accomplish that against the Jacket defense. I don't think Alvarado will either. They will put 2 or 3 drives together but that won't be enough, especially if Stephenville gets out to an early lead and forces the Indians to get out of their comfort zone. This game will be very close at halftime with Stephenville extending by 2 scores or more in the 3rd quarter. The Indians will be forced to go to the air in the 4th and that is where Stephenville will put them away.
Stephenville 34 Alvarado 14

Now for the rest of the 7-4A picks.

Hillsboro Eagles (1-6) @ Venus Bulldogs (6-0): Venus has proved this year they can handle teams of Hillsboro's caliber with relative ease. The Bulldogs cruise to 7-0.
Venus 38 Hillsboro 13

Stephenville vs. Venus

As predicted the Jackets won a physical ball game over Alvarado last week. The Indians gave Stephenville all they wanted but in the end ran out of arrows as the Jackets pulled away in the 4th quarter. The Jacket offense was able to hang 32 on Alvarado, the most points they have given up since the first game of the year in 2010. It was also Stephenville's 5th win over a state ranked opponent. No one will be able to accuse the Jackets of a light schedule. The win also clinches a playoff spot for Stephenville. The victory did come at a cost as starting linebacker Sam Macklin suffered a knee injury. The extent of his injury and duration he will be out is unknown at this time.

Stephenville will play its final home game of year this Friday as the Venus Bulldogs come to town for homecoming. It is also senior night so prepare for an extended pre-game and half time. The Bulldogs come into this matchup undefeated at 7-0. This is the best start for Venus in a very long time. The schedule has been kind to them as their opponents have a combined 5-39 record. But to their credit they have a 30 point margin of victory against those teams and have been very good on defense as well. It will interesting to see how they fare going against some of the worst programs in Texas to one of the best

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Venus runs the slot-T offense. That is what Amarillo ran against the Jackets. They will run the ball 85% of the time. The FB Rivas and TB Morgan are the best players. The QB Dugan does a good job of directing the rushing attack.

Defense
Venus plays a version of the 3-3 stack defense. This is the first time the Jackets have seen this type of defense. The are very aggressive and will blitz often and play a lot of man coverage. Most of their best players go both ways and have played well on defense.

Special Teams
The special teams are below average compared to what Stephenville has been playing.

Prediction

Just to give some perspective on how bad Venus' opponents have been, here are their Padilla Poll rankings. 2A-D1 schools, Red Oak Life ranked 108 out of 109. 3A schools FW Diamond-Hill Jarvis ranked 180 out of 182, Hillsboro 171, Mabank 161, and Dallas Roosevelt 143. 4A schools, Dallas Jefferson ranked 247 out of 247, dead last and FW Poly ranked 243. Venus is way over matched in this game. It will be over by halftime.
Stephenville 56 Venus 7

Now for the rest of the 7-4A picks.

Alvarado Indians (6-2) @ Glen Rose Tigers (6-1): This is the best game in region 1 this week. The Indians will bring their vaunted defense and rushing attack to Somervell County to take on the high octane Tigers. These two teams are about as even as it gets in my opinion, with that said the Tigers have an advantage on special teams and that will be the difference in the game.
Glen Rose 23 Alvarado 20
