Stephenville @ Mesquite Horn

What a difference a week makes. This time last week I was recapping how Stephenville dismantled Brownwood and now the Jackets are literally and figuratively licking their wounds. The Hebron game was just bad from the start. Kickoff was delayed 1 hour 45 minutes. The Jackets received the ball and march down to Hebron's 18 before the lightning sirens went off again delaying the game another 40 minutes. When Stephenville came back out senior running back Aiavion Edwards was on crutches. Edwards suffered an apparent foot injury during the first series. Junior receiver Alex Sanchez also injured his hand in the game. Sanchez's status is uncertain at this time. Through the injuries and the rain the Jackets battled hard for 48 minutes and lost on a 26 yard TD pass with 28 seconds left.

The Jackets make another trip to metroplex this week to take on the talented Horn Jaguars. The Jags come into this game at 1-3 with a 31-23 loss last week to Denton Guyer. Horn played Hebron two weeks ago and lost 21-20. The Jags are loaded with playmakers and are a talented team despite their 1-3 record. The Jackets will have their hands full with another tough 5A opponent, who was a playoff team from a year ago.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
The Jags have been a run oriented team this year. Horn will use the shotgun spread the majority of the time. They run the ball about 70%. QB Destri White started against Stephenville last after their starter went down with an injury. Medgar Coleman is a physical back with good speed. TE Vincent Hobbs will sub in often. He is Horn's leading receiver. Hobbs is a big target at 6'4 235 lbs. The OL is anchored by center Brock Appenzeller. Although the offense returns 6 starters from 2010 they lost 3 D1 players from a 9-5 playoff team last year. They have struggled some with consistency but make no mistake, the Jags have the talent to bust out any time.

Defense
Horn plays an aggressive 3-4 defense. The Jags will probable try to match up outside with us and bring the pressure. They are led by OLB Richard Jones. Jones plays with speed and aggression from the edge. The rest of the linebacking corp is very talented and fast as well. Devante Harris is one of the best defensive backs in the state. Harris is listed on the 2nd team Dave Campbell's Super Team at CB. He has elite 4.3 speed. The Jackets will need to be patient and take what the defense gives with sustained drives.

Special Teams
Horn has a good kicker in Travis Tamez. Tamez consistently gets his kickoffs down to the goal line. Tamez is also the punter and he uses the rugby style. The previously mentioned Harris is extremely dangerous in the return game. Stephenville will need to keep the ball out of his hands.

Prediction

Stephenville does not have any one player that can replace Aiavion Edwards but they can definitely pick up the slack through a team effort. The Jackets are executing at a higher level right now than Horn. I think you will see a very crisply executed game by your Jackets for their fourth victory of the year.
Stephenville 27 Horn 20

Now for the rest of the 8-4A picks.

Hewitt Midway Panthers (2-1) vs. Austin Bowie Bulldogs (2-2): Midway's game last week was canceled in the first half by weather but the Panthers were up 20-0 when it was called. Bowie is 5A playoff team from a year ago. Midway should roll into district with a victory.
Midway 28 Bowie 21

Waco Lions (3-1) vs. Mesquite Skeeters (2-2): Mesquite is much improved in 2011 after a 1-9 campaign last year. Both of their losses have been close including last weeks 28-22 OT loss to Denton Ryan. Ryan is ranked #2 in 4A. The Lions bite off a little more than they can chew this week.
Mesquite 35 Waco 21

Killeen Kangaroos (3-1) vs. Del Valle Cardinals (0-4): Killeen should be 4-1 going into their bye week before district play.
Killeen 31 Del Valle 17

Waco University Trojans (2-2) @. Waco La Vega Pirates (4-0): La Vega is a very good 3A team that should handle University.
La Vega 28 University 10

San Angelo Lakeview Chiefs (0-4) vs. Lampasas Badgers (3-1): The Chiefs are staring an 0-10 season right in the face.
Lampasas 35 Lakview 14

Many people where wondering how Stephenville would respond after their first loss of the season and the loss of standout running back Aiavion Edwards to injury. No one would of blamed the Jackets if they would of had a down game adjusting to the new personnel. The men in Blue and Gold would have none of the, "woe is me" mentality. They stated with their play on the field that we are still a good football team and we are going to play hard regardless of who's turn it is to step up. Stephenville beat a good Mesquite Horn team last night 28-20. Many people will look at Horn's 1-4 record and think they are not that good, but the Jags have lost the last 3 games by 8 points or less and return 7 offensive and 5 defensive starters off a 5A D-II quarterfinal team.

The game started out with both defenses flexing their muscle in a scoreless first quarter. The Jackets had one scoring opportunity but missed a 35 yard FG attempt.

The 2nd quarter saw Stephenville move the ball better. They scored their first touchdown of night on a 4 yard TD pass from Tyler Jones to Hunter Bernays. Jones stepped up in the pocket and right before he crossed the line of scrimmage found a wide open Bernays in the back of the endzone. Stephenville would move the ball well the rest of the 2nd quarter, but penalties killed several drives as they appeared out of sync with the new personnel packages. Horn would tie the game right before the half with a 27 yard TD run by Alex Johnson with 1:48 left in the first half.

Both teams made some good offensive adjustments at half as we saw 34 2nd half points scored between them. The Jackets started the 2nd half half out by forcing a Horn punt. Stephenville marched right down the field on their first possession and made the score 14-7 on a Witt Westbrook 5 yard run off the speed option. Horn would answer back with a 36 yard Tamez FG to make the score 14-10 at the 5:08 mark of the 3rd quarter. Stephenville answered back on the ensuing drive with a Brice Gunter 71 yard touchdown reception from Jones. Jones found Gunter on a post route and fired a rope 35 yards down the field. Gunter did the rest as he out ran the Horn secondary the rest of the way.

The Jags kept fighting back with a Tamez 35 yard FG on the first play of the 4th quarter. That made the score 21-13 with 11:56 left in the game. The Stephenville offensive line was winning the battle up front helping Westbrook to his 151 yards rushing on 24 carries with the one touchdown. Westbrook's running helped setup the Jackets final touchdown of the night. This one a great 9 yard catch by Gunter from Jones. It was 3rd and goal from the 9, Jones scrambled to his right and fired a ball where only Gunter could catch it. Gunter made a full all out dive dragging his feet as he fell out of the side of the endzone. It was an amazing catch. As the Jags did all night they kept coming back behind the running of QB Destri White. White had over 100 yards of his 129 yards rushing in the 2nd half. The Jags would cut the score to 28-20 with 4:41 left in the game on a 2 yard run by Alex Johnson. His 2nd touchdown on the night. Horn would force a Stephenville punt with one more chance to tie the game. Safety Mookie Carlile came up with his 3rd interception of year to nearly seal the deal. The Jackets needed one more first down to run out the clock. They had a 3rd and 5 from the Horn 35. Stephenville lined up in goal line and the offensive line plowed a hole for the first down run by Westbrook. The Jackets then got into the victory formation and ran out the clock for their 4th victory of the year.

Stephenville has a bye this week as they get ready for their district opener and homecoming game against San Angelo Lakeview.

Stephenville vs. San Angelo Lake View

The Jackets bounced back in a big way against Mesquite Horn. The questions anyone had on how the 2011 Jackets would handle adversity were answered in the Horn game. The defense played lights out. What did the Stephenville offense do with one of their top players out? They rolled up nearly 500 yards of offense and 28 points against a good 5A defense. Witt Westbrook who stepped in for Aiavion Edwards rushed for 151 yards on 24 carries with 1 touchdown. Jones completed 71% of his passes with 3 touchdowns. Two of those TDs went to Brice Gunter who also added 118 yards receiving on 6 catches. Much of the credit goes to the Jacket offensive line who took over the game in the 2nd half.

It is homecoming week and the start of district play. Stephenville is hosting San Angelo Lake View. The Chiefs come in 0-5 on the year. I apologize a head of time for the lack of information or statistics. The Lake View roster does not have height or weight information and there are no complete stats to be found anywhere.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
The Chiefs are a run oriented team. They will line up in the wish bone about a third of the time. The majority of the other time they will be up under center in the pro formation. Hunter Nelms is the anchor on the offensive line and has good size at 6'5 275 lbs. John Hernandez and Victor Saucedo will head the rushing attack.

Defense
Lake View will be the 4th team in a row the Jackets have faced that base out of the 3-4 defense. The Chiefs are led up front by returning starter Aaron Allen. Tyler Pacheco is one of their top players in the secondary.

Special Teams
#6 Nate Valesquez is the place kicker and has a pretty good leg. #20 Ricky Anderson is the punter. The Chiefs will have one of the least explosive return teams Stephenville will face.

Prediction

Coach Kuhlman is in his first year with Lake View after they posted a 1-9 campaign last year. He is trying to get the Chief program turned around and is off to a rough 0-5 start. Stephenville is the clear favorite and the 2nd string should get some good reps in this one. .
Stephenville 56 Lake View 7

Now for the rest of the 8-4A picks.

Hewitt Midway Panthers (3-1) vs. Waco High (3-2): This is a rivalry game without much love loss between these two teams. Both defenses have given up some points to other good teams. I expect a high scoring affair with Midway edging Waco..
Midway 38 Waco 35

Killeen Kangaroos (4-1) @ Waco University (2-3): The Roos have been playing well and should start district play with a victory.
Killeen 31 University 16

Stephenville started district play in dominate fashion extending their overall record to 5-1 and 1-0 in 8-4A play. They beat the San Angelo Lake View Chiefs 63-0 to the delight of the homecoming crowd.

The Jackets kicked off to start the game. Lake View would get one first down on their opening possession before they punted the ball to Stephenville. Tyler Jones wasted little time getting the Jackets on the board first as he found Hunter Bernays racing down the middle of the field for 49 yard touchdown pitch and catch. Lake View as they did all night would use as much of the 25 second play clock to try and shorten the game. The Chiefs would again gain 1 first down before another short punt into the wind. It only took the Jackets 3 plays to score the 1st of Witt Westbrook's 4 touchdowns. Stephenville led 14-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.

The punting game would plague the Chiefs all night and especially in the 2nd quarter. Lake View had two blocked punts and two long returns by Witt Westbrook inside Lake Views 20. The Jackets average starting field position was the Lake View 38 yard line. Westbrook scored the first 14 points of the 2nd qtr. on runs of 13 and 23 yards. Brice Gunter had a 23 yard touchdown on his only catch of the night. Cameron Burris finished off the scoring in the first half with a 14 yard burst to make the score 49-0 at the half. The Jackets needed less than 4 minutes of time of possession to score the 49 points.

Stephenville started the 2nd half with their worst field position of the night as Lake View's kickoff would go through the endzone for a touch back. The Jackets would need just 3 plays to go the 80 yards as Alex Sanchez took a reverse 58 yards to the house. Jones would finish off the scoring for the game with a 15 yard run off the zone read. He was untouched on the play. Stephenville would make wholesale substitutions for the rest of the game.

The Jackets travel to Waco next week to take on the University Trojans who fell to Killeen last night 44-19.

Stephenville @ Waco University

Sometimes when you are playing against an opponent you are heavily favored against it is hard to play focused and sharp. The Jackets were both last Friday to the delight of the homecoming crowd. The only suspense in the game is who would be crowned homecoming queen. Stephenville only needed 377 yards of offense and 4 pass attempts to beat the Chiefs 63-0.

Stephenville travels south down Hwy 6 to take on the University Trojans this week. University comes into the district contest with a 2-4 record and 0-1 in 8-4A play. The Trojans fell to Killeen last week 44-19. Expect University to be fired up playing the #10 team at home. The Jackets cannot afford to take anyone lightly even though they will be heavily favored in this contest as well. The Jackets will be one step closer to one of their goals this week with a victory, and that is making the playoffs.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
The Trojans will lineup in the shotgun spread most of the time. They are a balanced team, and will start 8 underclassmen. The youth on the offense has led to some inconsistency but they definitely have some weapons. The offensive line has some good size but they are young with only one senior, at the center spot. QB Haven is a dual threat and the 2nd leading rusher on the team. His favorite target is receiver Zack Green. Burns is the only other senior starting on offense and he has break away speed out of his running back spot. .

Defense
The Jackets will be facing the 4-2-5 defense for the first time this year. The secondary has been good only giving up 59 yards a game through the air. They are led by senior conerback Michael Coleman. The defensive front has been gashed by the run giving up 240 yards a game..

Special Teams
#20 Chris Gayton is the place kicker and his deep kicks will go anywhere from the 10 to the goal line. #16 Adonis Haven doubles as the punter and is pretty average. The Trojans have good athletes in the return game.

Prediction

University will be better than Lake View but the Jackets will still be heavy favorites. The Trojans will come out with a lot of emotion but Stephenville will play like one of the top teams in 4A once the emotions wear off.
Stephenville 49 University 7

Now for the rest of the 8-4A picks.

Waco High (4-2,1-0) @ Killeen Kangaroos (5-1,1-0): Waco stated we are a team to be reckoned with in 8-4A and beyond with a 26-24 victory over Midway last week. Killeen meanwhile took care of business against University. Killeen will be tough at home but in the end I think Waco beats the Roos and sets up a showdown with Stephenville in week 10.
Waco 30 Killeen 24

Midway Panthers (3-2,0-1) @ Lake View Chiefs (0-6,0-1): Midways gets back on track against the overmatched Chiefs.
Midway 56 Lake View 10

Jackets start fast, then hang on at the end

The Padilla Poll had Stephenville picked by 30 points over University. It appeared the Jackets were well on their way to fulfilling that prediction after the first quarter. Stephenville held a commanding 21-0 after the first frame. Witt Westbrook scored the first of his 3 touchdowns on a 4 yard run. That was followed by 12 yard TD pass from Tyler Jones to Brice Gunter. Westbrook capped the scoring in the 1st by taking a screen pass 17 yards to pay dirt.

The Jackets appeared to be on their way to taking a 28-0 lead early in the 2nd quarter when the Trojans stepped up. Jones had been perfect early going 9-9 for 180 yards and 2 touchdowns. The junior QB struggled the rest way going 7-20 for 82 yards and 2 interceptions. Jones' first INT came on a 3rd and goal play from University's 6. The errant pass was picked off by Jalen Harris in the endzone thwarting a 4th straight scoring opportunity for Stephenville. University would go 80 yards scoring on a 21 yard pass from Alvin Sanders to Adonis Haven.

Haven had a big night running, throwing, and catching the football for University. The senior QB accounted for 374 yards of offense and 4 touchdowns, he threw two TDs, caught one and rushed for one.

On the Jackets ensuing possession after University's first touchdown, Jones would have another pass picked off by Michael Coleman who returned it 40 yards to the house. The Jackets would settle down and score two more times before the end of the half. First on a Westbrook 14 yard run and a 26 yard field goal by Blake Barnes. Stephenville went into the half up 31-14.

University received the ball to start the 2nd half and only needed 2 plays to cut the lead down to 9. The Jackets blitzed and a scrambling Haven found Stephen Woods on a short out pattern. Woods cut the ball up field and was quickly met by 3 Jacket defenders. Woods spun out of the tackle and raced 73 yards for the touchdown. The snap on the PAT was bobbled and picked up by the kicker Gayton. He floated a pass to a wide open Fredrick Kelly for the 2 point conversion. That would be all the scoring in the 3rd quarter and much of the 4th.

Both teams finished with a flurry as they would score 21 points in the final 5:40 of the contest. Haven started the scoring with a 43 yard run to cut the Jackets lead down to 2, 31-29 with 5:40 left. The Jackets would put together their only scoring drive of the 2nd half, a 1 yard plunge by Padyn Giebler at the 2:30 mark to put the Jackets back up by 9 at 38-29. The Trojans would waste little time as they would answer on their very first play. This time Haven would do it with his arm as he found Preston Jones streaking down the sidelines for a 70 yard touchdown pass. Brice Gunter who got beat on the long TD pass would make up for it by recovering the ensuing onside kick. The Jackets would then lineup in their goal line power formation and run out the clock for the final score of 38-36.

Coach Gillespie said in his radio interview after the game, "I would rather have an ugly win than a pretty loss any day." Most importantly the Jackets are 2-0 in district play heading into a home contest with the Killeen Kangroos. The Roos have a 1-1 district mark after falling to Waco High last Thursday 31-21.

Stephenville vs. Killeen

The Jackets learned a very valuable lesson last week, you have to come to play every game and for 48 minutes. Stephenville looked well on their way to another blowout with a 21-0 first quarter lead but University bowed their necks and made the Jackets earn the "W". The Jackets looked flat and got rattled offensively. You couple that with bad tackling and University's confidence grew with every play until Stephenville found themselves in a dog fight. Credit the Trojans for a hard fought game but the Jackets learned that a team is not going to lay down for them even up 21-0. Do not let off the throttle until there is no doubt.

The Jackets will play host to the Killeen Kangaroos as they start a 2 game home stand. The Roos lost to Waco last week 31-21. Killeen had only lost one game prior to their contest with Waco. They are playing well. The Jackets will have their hands full as they try to keep pace with Waco for the district championship

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
The Roos will spread you out and to try to get their athletes in space. Last year they had a D1 QB and were much more balanced. Killeen has been more ground oriented this year. They have a good two headed running attack with Young and Scott. Young is the leading rusher but Scott is just a few yards behind him. The Roos are young at QB but when Gaskamp does go to the air look for Devarri McCray. Killeen has good strong side OL led by Chase Anderson.

Defense
Killeen base defense is the 4-3. They don't have a lot of size but they definitely have good overall speed. They close fast and tackle well. Their speed up front will be hard to contain on obvious passing situations led by Price at DE. Kouadio is their best interior lineman. The Roo back 7 has been very good only giving up 77 yards a game through the air. Justin Acker is the best Roo LB and the secondary is led by Ameer Lee.

Special Teams
Average kicking game with a bunch of skill on the return teams.

Prediction

I fully expect the Jackets to come out fired up after a lack luster performance last week. Killeen is a good football team but this is only their 2nd game away from Killeen. If the Jackets can establish the run they can win this game by 2 or 3 TDs. If they find themselves in predictable passing situations it will be a struggle. Stephenville has played well in the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium and with Killeen being on the road for just the 2nd time, the Jackets will win and keep pace with Waco.
Stephenville 38 Killeen 28

Now for the rest of the 8-4A picks.

Lake View Chiefs (0-7,0-2) @ Waco High (5-2,2-0): Waco's 2nd string will get plenty of action in this one.
Waco 56 Lake View 0

Waco University Trojans (2-5,0-2) @ Midway Panthers (4-2,1-1) @ : Midway got a win last week over Lake View and University realized they have the talent to play in this district. Midway is the better team but I have a hunch University carries over the momentum gained from last week and makes this game closer than people think.
Midway 35 University 27
