Stephenville vs. Monterrey Tec

My favorite time of year as arrived Jacket fans. It is football time in Texas. I can see the dance teams stepping, the band playing, the cheerleaders yelling, and the boys of fall laying their best on the field every Friday night. Your Stephenville Yellow Jackets are coming off their 5th State Championship in the last 20 years. If being the defending champs wasn't enough of a bulls eye, the AP poll has Stephenville ranked #1 to start the season. But as we found out last year it is not how start but how you finish. The Jackets finished in grand style scoring 70 in the championship game, the most points ever in an 11 man Texas High School Championship game. The accolades have been given out from last year and now it is time to show, "That Tradition Never Graduates"! I have one question to ask you Jacket fans, "are you ready for some football"!?!

Stephenville nearly had a perfect season in 2012. The only blemish was handed to them by Monterrey Tec. The Barregos were not intimidated one bit by the tradition and lofty expectations the Jackets had coming into 2012. Monterrey took it to Stephenville from the opening whistle, and in hindsight I believe that loss prepared the Jackets for their championship run. There are 12 returning starters on this years Stephenville squad that has that game fresh in their memory. Monterrey will not be taken lightly when that ball goes flying through the air to open the 2013 season..

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Monterrey Tec will run their offense from the spread and maintain pretty good balance run vs. pass. The Barregos will not be afraid to line up under center and pound the football either. They are a solid well coached football team that will not quit.

Defense
The Barregos or Wild Rams live up to their name on defense. They run a multiple look based out of the 3-4. They are not afraid the bring the heat and will do so often. They play a high risk high reward style of defense.

Special Teams
Tec is solid all around in their special teams play.

Prediction

We all saw last year that Monterrey can play good football. The stout Texas teams they have played over the years has benefited them well. They are just as good or better than many teams we could see in the playoffs. Tec is not unknown anymore to Stephenville and expect the Jackets to give them their full attention this go around.
Stephenville 38 Monterrey Tech 14

Now for the rest of the 7-4A picks.

Alvarado Indians (0-0) @ Bridgeport Bulls (0-0): Bridgeport returns 4 offensive and 8 defensive starters off a 4-7 playoff team. Alvarado returns 3 and 7 starters as well. Both teams return heavy on the defensive side of the ball. I look for a slow start as the new faces on offenses get their varsity feet underneath them. The Indians will be too much in the end and pull away in the 2nd half for comfortable "W"..
Alvarado 28 Bridgeport 10

Glen Rose Tigers (0-0) @ Carrollton Ranchview Wolves (0-0): The Wolves return 6 off and 4 def starters from a 2-8 team. The Tigers have 3 off and 4 def starters off a 10-2 playoff team. The Tigers graduated one of their most talented classes in their history. Ranchview has had a tough time getting wins the last few years. This will be a good team for the Tigers to face after losing so many talented starters from a year ago..
Glen Rose 28 Carrollton Ranchview 7

Hillsboro Eagles (0-0) vs. Buffalo Bison (0-0): Buffalo is a 2A D2 team. They went 6-4 for the 2nd year in row and have 5 off. and 3 def. starters back. Hillsboro has 7 off. and 7 def. starters back off a 1-9 team. The Eagles made steady improvement last year despite their 1-9 record. They have some good talent coming back and I expect them to avenge last years 23 point defeat by the Bison.
Hillsboro 28 Buffalo 21

Venus Bulldogs (0-0) vs. Fort Worth Polytechnic Parrots (0-0): 4A Poly was a 2-8 team last year. Venus has 7 and 5 starters returning from a 7-3 team. The Bulldogs started 2012 7-0 thanks to a friendly schedule before losing their last three to the three 7-3A playoff teams. Venus won this game last year 33-0 and with solid starters returning on offense I expect a similar outcome this year.
Venus 42 FW Poly 7

Stephenville @ Aledo

The Wardogs stepped up big time last week in the 4th quarter against Monterrey. The defense shut down the Barregos delivering a win against the only team to beat the 2012 State Champs. The Jackets appeared in complete control at half time leading 14-3. But to Monterrey's credit they brought the pressure in the 2nd half disrupting the high octane Jacket offense. While the offense sputtered in the 3rd quarter the Barregos were able to take the lead 16-14 on a long TD run and capitalize on a short field after a Jacket turnover. After Monterrey's last score the Wardogs bowed their neck and limited Monterrey to only 3 first downs and less than 100 yards of offense. It was an INT from All-State safety Mookie Carlile that set up the winning FG drive for the Jackets. Stephenville marched down to the Barregos 13 after Carlile's INT and Luis Garcia was true from 30 yards out. The defense sealed the victory for the Jackets.

It is time for one of the best rivalries over the last decade. The Jackets travel north to take on the 4A #2 Aledo Bearcats. Aledo dominated Highland Park last week 44-3. The Bearcats return 5 offensive and 6 defensive starters from last year's team. This years Aledo squad appears to be loaded with talent. They are a legit title contender in 4A this year. Stephenville and Aledo have played 14 times since 2002 and the series is tied 7-7. These two teams bring out the best in each other and I expect nothing less this Friday night at Bearcat Stadium.

Receiving Receptions Yards TDs
Taco Anderson 8 89 0
Brock Morrison 5 79 1

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
There is nothing new about Aledo's offense. They will run plays out of shotgun most of time but can line up under center in power formations as well. The Bearcats have another big physical offensive line. Bad news for the Bearcat opponents there is another Bishop under center. Luke Bishop the younger brother of 3 time state champ Matthew Bishop is the signal caller for the Bearcats. Everyone has been raving about Daythan Davis at running back. The senior moved over to offense from his linebacker position for 2013. Davis is a beast at 6'2 225 and punished Highland Park last week for 111 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground. Taco Anderson is the go to receiver and he is also a returning starter. Tight end Whatley is another good receiver for the Bearcats. He made a great one handed catch against the Scotties last week.

Defense
The Aledo defense was even more impressive against Highland Park. They limited the Scots to only 3 points and owned the line of scrimmage all night. The Bearcats base out of the 4-3 and are led by their standout middle linebacker Jordan Mittie. Mittie is a 3 year starter and their top play maker on defense. Aledo absolutely dominated HP up front and defensive tackle Cory Stitle is a good one. The Bearcat secondary is loaded with speed, returning starter Johnny Carter is their best cover corner.

Special Teams
Aledo appears to be solid in the kicking game this year. The Bearcats have some cats that can fly and the Jackets must be disciplined in their kick coverage assignments.

Prediction

Last year the Jackets struggled in their loss to Monterrey and Aledo was coming off a dominant performance against HP. I remember thinking, I just want to see improvement from the previous week for Stephenville regardless of the outcome. The Jackets did more than just improve from the Monterrey game they dominated Aledo from the get go. Anyone who was at last years game know the game was not as close as the final score 41-28 Stephenville. I know Aledo is better than last year and I believe the Jackets will make big strides in their quality of play from last week as well. Will it be enough to knock off the 4A #2 team at their house. The homer in me says yes. When in doubt always go with your inner homerism.
Stephenville 31 Aledo 28

Now for the rest of the 7-4A picks.

Alvarado Indians (1-0) @ Mexia Blackcats (0-1): Alvarado beat Bridgeport last week 42-30. Mexia meanwhile got throttled by China Spring 49-28. The Blackcats finished 0-10 last year and are picked last in district 19-3A in 2013. This one will get ugly for Mexia.
Alvarado 49 Mexia 13

Glen Rose Tigers (0-1) @ China Spring Cougars (1-0): The Tigers appear down this year after their loss to a not very good Carrollton Ranchview. China Spring is a consistent 3A playoff team and this is somewhat of a rivalry game. I expect the Cougars to roll in this one.
China Spring 42 Glen Rose 14

Hillsboro Eagles (0-1) @ Hamilton Bulldogs (0-1): I thought Hillsboro might be improved from last year with 14 returning starters. I guess I thought wrong as they were hammered by 2A Buffalo. The Eagles get another 2A team this week as they travel to Hamilton. The Bulldogs were beat convincingly last week by Comanche 32-7. This will be one of just a few games Hillsboro can get a "W".
Hillsboro 21 Hamilton 14

Venus Bulldogs (1-0) vs. Dallas Jefferson Patriots (0-1): I was a little surprised by Venus' 7 point victory last week over FW Poly. I thought the margin of victory would of been larger. There is no easy way to put this, Jefferson is one of the worst football programs in Texas. They lost last week to Dallas Adamson 19-12. Venus rolls this week..
Venus 35 Jefferson 6

Stephenville vs. Dillard, FL

The Jackets ran into a buzz saw last Friday as they were soundly beaten by rival Aledo 56-14. It was a typical Aledo-Stephenville game in the first half with both teams going back and forth. The Bearcats jumped out to a 21-0 lead before the Jackets finally got on the board 21-7 midway thru the 2nd quarter. The Jacket defense held on the ensuing possession and gave the offense one last chance before the half. Stidham marched the team down the field but the drive ended in an incomplete pass in the endzone as time expired in the first half. Stephenville received the ball to start the 2nd half. The kickoff went into the endzone for a touchback and that was about all that went well for the Jackets in the 3rd quarter. Stephenville turned the ball over and the Bearcats would score on the next play. Aledo would go on to score on it's next 2 offensive plays to push their lead to 42-7 midway through the 3rd quarter. The scoring barrage continued for the Bearcats as they scored 4 more touchdowns in the game with two of them negated by penalty. The Jacket offense scored one more time in the 4th qtr. after Aledo had started subbing in players on defense. Coach Gillespie stated in his post game interview, "We got humbled tonight". He went on to say, "It is time to go to work."

The Jackets travel to Dallas' Kincaide Stadium this Saturday to take on the Dillard Panthers from Florida. The Panthers are 0-1 on the year losing to Plantation, FL in week one 33-6. Dillard had a bye last week. Dillard finished 6-6 last year. The Panthers have two 2 star recruits listed on Rivals, they are WR Dennis Turner and DE Ramsey Randy. Dillard struggled offensively in their only game finishing with -9 yards rushing on 13 carries. Their lone score came on a fumble return in the 3rd qtr to tie the game at 6-6. Plantation went on to score 27 unanswered points for the 33-6 final. I do not have individual stats for Dillard just team stats. This will be just the 2nd team Stephenville has ever played from outside Texas, the other being Monterrey Prep.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Dillard runs the shotgun spread and throws about 80% of the time. They will try and spread the field and get their play makers in space. The short passing game supplements as their running game. #8 Lee Martin started their first game at QB and he is more of a pocket passer. Martin was pulled late in the 1st half after two INTs and replaced with #12 Collins. Collins is more of a dual threat. #1 Roberts is definitely a threat out of the backfield. #14 Turner and #2 Marshall are their top play makers out wide. The offensive line is big but young with two freshmen and one sophomore starting.

Defense
This is definitely the better side of the ball for the Panthers. They base out of the 4-3 cover 4. They have speed to burn on D. #10 Randy is their top down lineman. The middle linebacker #40 Nelson is their top play maker at LB, and safety #4 Evans is their best player in the secondary.

Special Teams
Dillard has an average to below average kicking game. Their return game can be dangerous and they fly down field on kick coverage.

Prediction

The Jackets go from playing a top 3 senior heavy Aledo team to a super athletic young Dillard squad. The Panthers struggled offensively in their opener with 3 freshmen starting on offense. The defense held their own for a while before wearing down. Their opponent Plantation was their own worst enemy committing 20 penalties. They will not get that from Stephenville as the Jackets have only committed 5 penalties in two games. I saw flashes of a really good football team last Friday from Stephenville. It is just a matter of executing and putting it together for all 4 quarters. I believe the humbling Stephenville received last Friday will be the catalyst the 2013 Jackets needed to head in the direction I know they're capable of.
Stephenville 27 Dillard 7

Now for the rest of the 7-3A picks.

Alvarado Indians (2-0) vs. FW Southwest Raiders (1-1): I was a little surprised last week by Alvarado's 3 point victory over Mexia (19-16). Mexia lost their opener to China Spring by 3 TDs. Southwest is coming off a track meet they lost to Everman 51-39. The Raiders have had little trouble scoring points this year and the 3 point win over Mexia gives me cause for concern for the Indians in this matchup.
Southwest 27 Alvarado 21

Glen Rose Tigers (0-2) vs. Mineral Wells Rams (0-2): Even though Glen Rose is down compared to last year this is the team to get right against Mineral Wells has lost the first 2 games of the season by a combined score of 119-7. The Tigers get in the win column this week.
Glen Rose 34 Mineral Wells 13

Hillsboro Eagles (1-1) vs. Clifton Cubs (0-2): The Eagles broke through last week against Hamilton in a shootout 46-43. Clifton another 2A school lost to Rosebud-Lott last week 46-24. Can Hillsboro get two in row? I think so.
Hillsboro 33 Clifton 20

Venus Bulldogs (2-0) vs. Maypearl Panthers (1-1): After a slow start against FW Poly Venus came back strong against Jefferson winning 49-7. Maypearl is a 2A school that was 1-9 last year but has 7 offensive and 8 defensive starters returning. They beat Itasca 40-0 last week. I still think Venus wins but it will be a much closer ball game this year.
Venus 30 Maypearl 20

Stephenville vs. Waco La Vega

Stephenville earned some much needed confidence last week after a rough game against rival Aledo. The Jackets stumbled out against Dillard and fell behind 26-8 to the Panthers, but fought back for the 46-32 victory. You never know how long it will take a team to find its identity, every year is different. That is one of the reasons that makes Texas high school football so great. Some where in the 2nd quarter things started to click and come together for the Jackets. I believe we will all look back at this game as the moment the 2013 Yellow Jackets became a team and figured it out. They kept their noses down and continued to work hard until good things started happening. That is a credit to our young men's work ethic and coaching staff. The MVP of the game for Stephenville was Senior Safety Mookie Carlile. Carlile led the team in receptions, receiving yards, and had two 2nd half interceptions to lead the Jacket comeback. Freshman running back Kaegun Williams bust onto the scene as well with his first 100 yard rushing performance and 3 total touchdowns, 2 rushing and 1 receiving. Good things are ahead for your Stephenville Yellow Jackets.

The Jackets return home this week to take on the Waco La Vega Pirates for the "Heart of Gold" game. The Pirates come in with a 1-2 record losing to Mexia last week 37-20. La Vega has been one of the top teams in 3A for the last few years but appears to be having a down year in 2013. I do not have a lot of statistical information on La Vega as they do not report stats.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
La Vega will line up in the spread and run the football about 80% of the time. The Pirates staple is the zone stretch. Their top play maker is running back Wagoner. All five starters on the offensive line are new this year. The only returning starter on offense is slot/WR Gibson.

Defense
The Pirates base out of the 3-4. They only have two returning starters on this side of the ball. Wagoner at safety who played linebacker last year and Arnett who returns at linebacker. La Vega has struggled with consistency so far on defense. Their top players are at safety Wagoner and Benson, and Arnett at line backer.

Special Teams
La Vega's kicker and punter are both right footed and average for high school. They do have good speed in the return game and play hard and fast on kick coverage.

Prediction

Stephenville earned some much needed confidence in last weeks come from behind win versus Dillard. La Vega meanwhile continues to struggle losing to a very average Mexia team last week. The Pirates are going through some growing pains this year with 19 new starters total. The Jackets should continue their surge upward with a victory in the "Heart of Gold" game.
Stephenville 42 La Vega 14

Now for the rest of the 7-4A picks.

Alvarado Indians (2-1) @. China Spring Cougars (3-0): FW Southwest beat Alvarado last week by 21. The Indians have struggled in all 3 games offensively as teams have loaded the box to stop their running attack. This will continue for the Indians until they can prove they can throw the football effectively. China Spring on the other hand has been impressive in their 3 wins scoring no less than 40 points in all three vitories. The Indians go down for a 2nd week in a row.
China Spring 24 Alvarado 14

Glen Rose Tigers (1-2) @ Crandall Pirates (1-2): This should be a good ball game against two teams trying to find their identity in 2013. I believe this is a pick'em game and I am going with Coach Dunn and the Glen Rose Tigers to build off of last weeks victory.
Glen Rose 28 Crandall 21

Hillsboro Eagles (2-1) @ Lake Worth Bullfrogs (2-1): The Eagles won a close one last week against 2A Clifton 21-20. Lake Worth dropped their first game of the year against a good Frisco Lone Star team 54-20 but won convincingly in their first two games by an average score of 45-14. Lake Worth rolls in this one.
Lake Worth 42 Hillsboro 21

Venus Bulldogs (3-0) @ Red Oak Life Mustangs (2-1): Venus continues their fast start with a victory over an improved Red Oak Life.
Venus 35 Red Oak Life 21

Stephenville vs. Amarillo

High school football programs across Texas have an universal goal to improve each week trying to peak at the right time. Stephenville has built a strong tradition on this principle and 2013 is no exception. The Jackets moved up another rung in the ladder last week with a convincing 56-23 win over Waco La Vega. Stephenville started strong opening the game with a 14-0 lead. The Jackets had some miscues late in the 1st quarter and early in the 2nd to allow La Vega back in the game. Stephenville regained control of the momentum to score 21 unanswered points late in the 2nd and never looked back. Coach Gillespie stated in his post game interview that the stretches of inconsistent play are becoming shorter and shorter with every game. That is a sign of a good football team and the 2013 Yellow Jackets are on track to have very success season.

Stephenville travels out to Snyder this week to take on the Amarillo Sandies. Amarillo started the season out with convincing victories over Odessa High and Amarillo Tascosa. They then lost a close ball game against Rider 45-44 in over time, and lost last week against perennial 4A power Wolforth Frenship 42-31. This is a very solid football team that is one year removed from 5A. The Jackets will have their work cut out for them this Saturday at 2pm in Snyder.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
The Sandies run the wing-T offense with emphasis on the run part. Amarillo will run the football about 80% of the time and attempt big plays with play action pass. The wing-T forces a defense to play assignment football with all the misdirection in the play action. This type of offense requires a good QB at handling the football and Issac Garcia has done a good job running their attack. The top rusher is tail back Deon Lynch. Lynch is shifty with good speed to take it to the house. The offensive line is big and agile with returning center Britt leading the way. The tight end Burney has been the main target in the passing game and leads the Sandies with 4 receiving touchdowns.

Defense
Amarillo base out of the 3-4 and will bring multiple looks. Amarillo will not be afraid to bring pressure and play man coverage in the secondary. It is a risk-reward type approach and the Sandies have allowed some big plays. Their best down lineman is returning nose guard Florey. Outside linebacker Bowerman is another returning starter and wreaks havoc from the outside. The Sandies' top play maker on defense is safety Braden Marusak. Marusak is a big hitter and can cover a lot of ground from his safety position.

Special Teams
Amarillo is solid all the way around on special teams. #88 Cathey is the place kicker and #7 Scott is the punter.

Prediction

This is a very even match up as both teams have played well in two games and inconsistent in two games. The Jackets are the team that has been trending up ward in their play as Amarillo has dropped their last two games. I expect a good physical ball game with the Jackets continuing their improved play.
Stephenville 35 Amarillo 24

Now for the rest of the 7-4A picks.

Alvarado Indians (2-2) vs. Waco Connally Cadets (3-1): Alvarado has struggled this season with the lack of a passing game and lost last week to China Spring 33-22. Connally is improved this year with their 3-1 record and a victory over Mexia 30-20 last Friday. The Indians will struggle in this game as well unless they can become more balanced on offense.
Connally 28 Alvarado 21

Glen Rose Tigers (1-2) vs. West Trojans (1-3): Glen Rose's game against Crandall was cancelled last Friday due to weather. West beat 2A Clifton 31-13 last week. This should be a very even match up with the Tigers just a tick better.
Glen Rose 31 West 21

Hillsboro Eagles (2-2) vs. Hico Tigers (4-0): Hillsboro is improved this year but so is Hico. The Eagles will have a tough time containing the 1A Tigers.
Hico 35 Hillsboro 14

Venus Bulldogs (4-0) @ Dallas Roosevelt Mustangs (0-4): Venus will continue their unbeaten season against a Roosevelt team that was hammered last week by Plano Prestonwood 56-17.
Venus 28 Roosevelt 14
