Stephenville @ Glen Rose

The Jackets held true to form in their game against Amarillo showing improvement from the previous week. Stephenville avoided the slow start that had plagued them early in the season. Special teams started the scoring out for the Jackets as Kobe Beavers blocked a punt and Tyler Isham scooped it up and took it to the house. The Jacket offense had their best game of the season accumulating 617 yards of total offense and scored 58 points. The defense fought hard against a solid Amarillo squad that ran the wing-T very well. QB Jarrett Stidham was one the stars of the show as the junior signal caller threw for 344 yards with 4 TDs and rushed for another 132 yards and a touchdown. By the time the clock hit all zeros the Jackets rode out of Snyder with a 64-42 victory.

Stephenville is coming off a bye week heading into their second season. That second season is district play. The district title and a playoff spot are up for grabs. The Jackets are heavy favorites to repeat as 7-3A champions, and up first for the Jackets is the Glen Rose Tigers. The Tigers come in with a 2-3 record and lost their last game to Fairfield 55-7. Fairfield is ranked #7 in the AP poll in 3A

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Glen Rose runs an up tempo spread offense. They have been very balanced this year rush vs pass. The Tigers are very young on both sides of the ball but especially on offense. They start only one senior, wide receiver Colton Bumpus and only have one returning starter, left tackle RJ Darch. The offensive line has decent size but has struggled with consistency. Glen Rose has struggled all year with the shotgun snap leading to several turnovers. Junior QB Lane has been accurate completing 63% of his passes with only 3 interceptions. The top play maker on offense is H-back Hayden Holder. Holder is leading the Tigers in rushing and receiving. He will line up all over the place at running back, receiver, and quarterback. The Jackets must account for Holder on every snap.

Defense
Glen Rose will base out of the 3-4 defense and bring multiple looks. The Tigers are young on this side of the ball as well. They only have 3 seniors starting and one returning starter on defense. The lone returning starter is defense end Jed Bridges who played linebacker last year. Glen Rose has had trouble stopping the run giving up 228 yards a game on the ground including 430 rushing yards to Fairfield last week. The Tigers have not fared much better in pass defense. The aforementioned Holder will play some defense as well where he started last year at linebacker. When Holder is in he makes their defense much better as he Glen Rose's best athlete.

Special Teams
Glen Rose returns their place kicker from last year #11 Martin de Los Santos. Los Santos is right footed and a dependable kicker. He will kick it both deep and pooch it on kickoffs. The Tigers will run some swinging gate on extra points. Glen Rose has used different punters throughout the season. Holder is their ruby style punter, the QB Lane will quick kick, and they will also use #2 Locke in a more traditional punt roll. The Tigers have been good in their return game returning one for a touchdown this season.

Prediction

The Tigers graduated arguably one of their best classes in school history last season. This season they have a very young squad with only 2 returning starters, 18 out of the 22 starters are underclassmen. Their results have been a mixed bag. They have beat the bad teams on their schedule and struggled against the playoff caliber opponents. The Jackets have been steadily improving each week and should start district out with a convincing victory over Glen Rose.
Stephenville 49 Glen Rose 14

Now for the rest of the 7-4A picks.

Hillsboro Eagles (2-4) @ Alvarado Indians (3-3): Alvarado earned a good win last week against a playoff caliber opponent beating Decatur 31-27. Hillsboro was hammered by Rockdale 59-7. It will be more of the same for Hillsboro as Alvarado will ground and pound the Eagles.
Alvarado 42 Hillsboro 0

Stephenville vs. Alvarado

Stephenville started out district play with a convincing victory over Glen Rose. The Jackets were in complete control from the opening kickoff. Stephenville led 42-0 at halftime holding Glen Rose to just 38 yards of offense. It was the most complete half of football the Jackets have put together in 2013. Stephenville used a very balanced offense gaining over 300 yards on the ground and over 240 through the air. The Jackets keep improving with every game and that is just what you want as district play gets underway.

It is homecoming week for Stephenville and the Alvarado Indians come to town with their 4-3 record. Stephenville can mathematically clinch a playoff berth with a victory and just as important secure the #1 seed for division 1 out of 7-3A. The Indians are also 1-0 in district with a 58-21 victory over Hillsboro. Alvarado was in a tight ball game with the Eagles as the score was 28-21 Alvarado midway through the 3rd quarter before the Indians reeled off 30 unanswered points. We will also be honoring the 20th anniversary of the 1993 State Champion team before kickoff. The 1993 team won Stephenville's first state championship in football.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Alvarado runs the traditional I-formation offense. The Indians are big and physical on the offensive line and will run the football about 90% of the time. They have a bell cow at running back #26 Adrian Hendrick. Hendrick is averaging 33 rushes per game and 6.2 yards per rush. Alvarado graduated a 3 year starter at QB last year in Kenny West. West did a very good job at keeping defenses honest. The Indians miss that experience at QB and have struggled to throw the ball. Alvarado is only averaging 30 yards a game through the air and completing just 30% of their passes. This has allowed the opposition to stack the box against the run, and resulted in Alvarado averaging 2 touchdowns and 100 yards less a game in 2013.

Defense
The Indians base out of the 3-4 defense. Alvarado is solid defensively and led by a very good defensive line. The top play maker up front is defensive end Brazos Fuller. Fuller is a 3 year starter and a flat out stud. He leads the team in tackles with 51, sacks with 7, and tackles for loss with 14. Alvarado's top linebacker is #33 Cornett. Cornett is 2nd on the team in tackles with 50 and leads a very good linebacking core. The Indians front 7 has been solid all season. The secondary has struggled some in pass defense with only one returning starter, safety #2 Hudson.

Special Teams
Alvarado is solid all the way around on special teams.

Prediction

The Indians are not quite as good as last year's squad but still a solid well coached football team. You can bet they will be fired up to play the Jackets, and even more fuel to the fire has been added with it being homecoming week for Stephenville. That works both ways as Stephenville will want to defend the home turf in front of the homecoming crowd. The winner locks up a playoff spot and the number 1 seed in division 1. If the Jackets manage the emotion early in the game they will come away with a victory and the district championship all but sown up.

Stephenville 42 Alvarado 14

Now for the rest of the 7-4A picks.

Venus Bulldogs (5-1) @ Hillsboro Eagles (2-5): This is a huge game for these two teams as the winner more than likely locks up the final playoff spot in 7-3A. Hillsboro hung tough last week with Alvarado for 2 1/2 quarters while Venus was on their bye week. I expect a tough hard fought ball game with Venus just slightly better than Hillsboro.
Venus 28 Hillsboro 24

Stephenville @ Venus

The Jackets continued their strong play beating district foe Alvarado 41-7. Stephenville's rushing attack was outstanding as the Jackets averaged over 9 yards per rush. Freshman running back Kaegun Williams continues to impress with his best performance of his young career. Williams had 10 carries for 164 yards and 3 touchdowns. Stidham was just as deadly ripping the Indian defense for 77 yards on 8 touches. If you take his sack yards away Stidham gained 97 on the ground. The 1-2 punch of Williams and Stidham averaged 14.5 yards per rush. Not to be out done the Wardogs had their best game of 2013 holding Alvarado to 161 yards of total offense. Indian running back Adrian Hendricks had been averaging over 200 yards a game rushing and the Jackets held him to 44 yards on 20 carries. This team is peaking just at the right time of year.

Stephenville will travel up highway 67 to take on the Venus Bulldogs. Venus comes in with a 5-2 record and 0-1 in district action. The Bulldogs were beat last week by Hillsboro 28-0. Hillsboro had some play makers that had been out and returned for the Venus game. The returning starters for Hillsboro made a huge impact in a surprising lopsided victory. The game will be played just down the road from Venus in Midlothian ISD Stadium. You can click here for directions and stadium information.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Venus runs an up tempo version of the wing-T. They will huddle about 3 yards off the ball, rush to the line scrimmage, and snap the ball. This gives the defense little time to lineup correctly. The Bulldogs have played a relatively weak schedule and have taken full advantage against the competition. Venus is small but quick up front with 3 returning starters on the line. They also return QB Dugan and TE Wheeler. The best athlete on the team is tailback Hernandez who is averaging over 10 yards per rush. The Bulldogs will run about 80% of the time but when they go to the air Dugan will be looking for the aforementioned Wheeler..

Defense
The Bulldogs base out of the 3-5-3. This is a defensive alignment you do not see very often. It allows smaller, quicker players to compete against bigger more physical opponents. Venus will vary their defensive looks and blitz out of many different formations. This defense can also be prone to the big play. The Bulldogs have 6 players going both ways. Middle linebacker Rudd is a returning starter and their top player in the front 7. Tailback and free safety Hernandez is the the Bulldogs best player in the secondary.

Special Teams
Sophomore #4 McKinney is the punter and he is employs the rugby style punt. #20 Hernandez is the place kicker. Venus has pooch kicked nearly every time on kickoffs.

Prediction

This game is a mismatch. Venus has 6 players going both ways and only had 25 suited up on varsity against Hillsboro last week. The Jackets should flex their strength from the opening kickoff.
Stephenville 56 Venus 0

Now for the rest of the 7-4A picks.

Glen Rose Tigers (2-4,0-1) @ Alvarado Indians (4-4,1-1): Both teams are coming off lopsided losses to Stephenville. Glen Rose had a bye last week. I believe these two teams are pretty evenly matched in talent. The Indians should have the edge with their ball control ground game and home field advantage.
Alvarado 28 Glen Rose 21

Stephenville vs. Hillsboro

Stephenville came into last week's game as heavy favorites. They had a workman type attitude and took care of the business in front of them. The Jackets ground game was punishing, to a tune of 357 yards on just 21 carries. The Wardogs have shut out every district opponent in the first half. The defense scored their first touchdown of the season on a forced fumble by Dakota Messer and recovered in the endzone by Kobe Beavers. Stephenville has all 3 phases executing at a high level as the regular season winds down.

The regular season and home finale for the Jackets is this Friday. Stephenville will take on the Hillsboro Eagles for senior night at Tarleton Memorial Stadium. Hillsboro is coming off their bye after beating Venus 28-0 the previous week. Their victory over Venus likely secured the Eagles a playoff spot. They are playing really good football right now and the Jackets must respect them and their speed. Stephenville can clinch their 2nd consecutive out right district title with a victory this Friday

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Hillsboro runs a multiple offense with 3 backs in the back field the majority of the time. Their favorite formations are the flex diamond which is an inverted bone look and the wishbone. They will also run some spread. Hillsboro will run the ball about 75-80% of the time. The Eagles definitely have some speed and home run hitters on offense. The best player is returning starter Deontre Richardson. Richardson broke a 74 yarder last year against Stephenville as a sophomore. He has some serious wheels.

Defense
Hillsboro's base defense is the 4-4 with 4 down linemen and 4 linebackers. They have several starters going both ways and 7 juniors on this side of the ball. The Eagles have struggled defensively against better competition.

Special Teams
The return game can be dangerous with their speed at the skill positions. Hillsboro will pooch and kick it deep on kickoffs. They are also not afraid to run fake punts either.

Prediction

Much like last week Stephenville will be a heavy favorite but the Jackets must be ready as the Eagles have the speed to make them sweat. Hillsboro has played well in their last two games. The Eagles were only 7 points down to Alvarado midway through the 3rd quarter and beat Venus 28-0. With that said I expect the Jackets to take care of business and head into the playoffs on a good note.
Stephenville 56 Hillsboro 14

Now for the rest of the 7-4A picks.

Venus Bulldogs (5-3,0-2) @ Glen Rose Tigers (2-5,0-2): Both teams will be fighting for their playoff lives. The Tigers are banged up but I believe they have the talent to take this one. Glen Rose pulls away late for a comfortable victory.
Glen Rose 35 Venus 14
