Stephenville vs. South Anchorage

It is high school football time in Texas! This is one of my favorite times of the year. You can feel the optimism across the state as high school football fans hope to see perfection and expecting excellence along the way. Two years ago Stephenville played their first opponent from outside the Lone Star State when they face off against Monterrey Tec, Mexico. The next year they played Monterrey Tec again and their first out of state opponent in Dillard, FL. This year the Jackets face off against the South Anchorage Alaska Wolverines.

The Wolverines season started 2 weeks ago and SAHS is 2-0 on the young season. They beat Anchorage Dimond 20-0 and Eagle River Chugiak 57-12. The Wolverines return 9 starters on both sides of the ball from a 5-4 team in 2013. Don't let that record fool you as they suffered some injuries to key players and have won an Alaskan Big School state championship as recently as 2012. SAHS Head Coach John Lewis said this on why his team is coming to Texas, "We wanted this game because it gets us to Texas. To see the best football in the country. Our bottom line is that we could stay in our state and be a stagnant program or we can push ourselves forward and try to be better."

Let us take a look at the match up.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
SAHS will run out of the Ace and Pro sets. The Wolverines will run the football about 75% of the time. SAHS uses the run to set up their efficient play action pass. They will rotate players in the backfield and use misdirection in their rush attack. Augafa is the best athlete on the team and go to player. Settle is shifty and a play maker out wide. The OL has good size and plays with aggression.

Defense
The Wolverines base out of the 3-3 stack cover 3 and will run some 4-2-5 as well. They play an aggressive style of defense and will not be afraid to bring pressure. They have several players going both ways and will rotate often.

Special Teams
SAHS has a good place kicker that can send it inside the 5 yard line on kickoffs. They have a solid return game with Augafa returning a punt 52 yards for a TD last week..

Prediction

SAHS will be pumped to prove they can play with a Texas high school team. I expect the emotion to be high at the start of the game. The Wolverines will be more polished than most first game opponents with 2 games under their belt. I do expect the heat and humidity to wear on SAHS as the game goes on with so many 2 way players. The Wolverines are well coached and play good football. The Jackets cannot take them lightly or they will be looking at the wrong side of the scoreboard. I believe the game will be close through 3 quarters with Stephenville pulling away in the 4th.
Stephenville 38 South Anchorage 21

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Big Spring Steers (0-0) @ Kerrville Tivy Antlers (0-0): Big Spring returns several starters on offense including Tobyn Tannehill at QB, but the Steers only return 2 on defense. The Antlers are a projected playoff team out of 27-5A. I think they will edge Big Spring in a high scoring game.
Tivy 42 Big Spring 31

Gatesville Hornets (0-0) @ Brownwood Lions (0-0): This is a good match up. Both teams are expected to better in 2014. Gatesville returns 17 starters off a 3-7 team and Brownwood returns 9 off of a 4-7 playoff team. The Hornets edge the Lions.
Gatesville 28 Brownwood 21

Littlefield Wildcats (0-0) @ Snyder Tigers (0-0): Littlefield is from 1-3A D1 and picked first in their district with 6 offensive and 3 defensive starters returning. Snyder has 4 and 7 starters returning respectively. The Tigers beat the Wildcats at home.
Snyder 28 Littlefield 21

Abilene Wylie Bulldogs (0-0) @ Argyle Eagles (0-0): The Bulldogs seem to reload every year, but the defending champs will be too much at their house.
Argyle 35 Wylie 21

Stephenville @ Gatesville

The Jackets' shutout last week was their first in a season opener since 1998 when they blanked FW Richland 45-0. Many people expected big things from the Jacket offense this year, and they did not disappoint against Anchorage. The Jacket "O" racked up over 500 yards and 43 points. But the Wardogs stole the show in my opinion. Not only did they shut out the Wolverines they held them to 10 first downs, 148 yards of total offense including only 86 rushing. That is 130 yards below what the #1 team in Alaska had averaged in 2 games running the football. Anchorage averaged just 3 yards per rush. Another impressive stat for the Jackets is they only committed 4 penalties for 25 yards.

Stephenville heads to central Texas to take on the Gatesville Hornets. Gatesville was beaten last week by Brownwood 35-0. This will be the first meeting between these two since 1987. The Hornets and Jackets have played 10 times with Gatesville leading the series 6-4. Here is a fun fact, Gatesville handed Stephenville their 2nd worse loss in program history by beating the Jackets 82-0 in 1920, Stephenville's inaugural football season. Stephenville's worst loss came at the hands of De Leon in 1921 when the Bearcats beat the Jackets 122-0, ouch.

Let us take a look at the match up.

Kaegun Williams 4 111 1

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Gatesville will be the polar opposite of what we saw last week. The Hornets will spread out and throw the football around about 65-70% of the time. Speer is a dual threat and can extend the play with his feet. Jones was his go to target last week catching 5 balls for 67 yards. TE Cooper Edmiston is another play maker for the Hornets. Edmiston also doubles at middle linebacker. Gatesville struggled last week up front against Brownwood. The Hornets also turned the ball over 5 times, 3 INTs and 2 fumbles.

Defense
The Hornets played well on this side of the ball in spurts. They base out of the 3-3 stack, the same type of defense the Jackets saw last week. The front 7 especially at LB is the strength for the team. The secondary is young and struggled some against Brownwood.

Special Teams
#15 Hennessy is the place kicker. He did not get much action last week. The QB Speer is the punter. He will quick kick and traditional punt as well. Their return game is average for 4A ball.

Prediction

Gatesville will be hard pressed to keep this game from getting out of hand. The Hornets young secondary vs. Stidham & Co. is a mismatch.
Stephenville 56 Gatesville 7

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Big Spring Steers (0-1) @ Monahans Loboes (1-0): The Loboes rolled Alpine last week 71-21 while the Steers stole one from Tivy 58-56. This is one of the best games in all of west Texas this week. I expect another shootout with the Steers just edging Monahans
Big Spring 42 Monahans 38

Graham Steers (1-0) @ Brownwood Lions (1-0): Brownwood will find out just how much better they are this year when they welcome the #3 ranked Graham Steers into Lion Country. I can see this contest being a 1 score game late with Graham finally putting it away.
Graham 31 Brownwood 21

Slaton Tigers (0-1) @ Snyder Tigers (0-1): Both teams were beat by 4 touchdowns last week. Snyder better get a win here or they might not get one looking at their remaining schedule.
Snyder 35 Slaton 21

Abilene Wylie Bulldogs (0-1) @ Burnet Bulldogs (1-0): One thing you can never accuse Wylie of and that is scheduling soft. Wylie faces one of the top teams from region 4 in Burnet. Burnet beat arch-rival Marble Falls 51-45 last week in OT. Wylie lost to the defending State Champ Argyle Eagles by 6 while turning the ball over 5 times. Two of those turnovers led to Eagle defensive touchdowns. Wylie gets on the winning side this week against another very good opponent.
Wylie 34 Burnet 30

Stephenville @ Everman

Stephenville continued their dominant start to the 2014 season by beating Gatesville 49-6. The offense racked up over 500 yards again and the defense still hasn't allowed a touchdown on the young season. Stidham was stellar completing 20 of 24 passes for 377 yards and 5 touchdowns. Tight end Josh Nowell is emerging as big threat in the middle of the field at 6'4 with soft hands. The highlight of the game has to be Darian Brown's one handed snag in full stride at the 10 yard line. Defensively, Garrett Crew had a whale of a game totaling 14 tackles with 4 TFL and 2 sacks.

This week the competition gets much stiffer as the Jackets head to Tarrant County to take on the Everman Bulldogs. Everman is 2-0 on the year and ranked in the top 25 of 5A by both the Padilla Poll and Harris Poll. The Bulldogs beat FW Nolan 21-10 in week 1 and demolished FW Southwest 61-12 in week 2.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Everman runs the football 80% of the time but 98% of their yards have come via the ground. The Bulldogs will be under center the majority of the time in power sets with a wing back. Everman likes to run the buck sweep, power lead, and wingback counter. The Bulldogs Kierre Crossley is one the most talented tailbacks to come through the program. That is saying something considering Everman's history. Crossley has the whole package for a running back. He is fast, shifty, great vision, and deceptively powerful for his frame. Everman is not a one trick pony as fullback Davis and wingback Norris are very dangerous runners as well. The Bulldog offensive line is big and nasty led by LT Booker.

Defense
Everman has traditionally based out of the 4-3 but will run some 3-3 stack as well to take advantage of their speed. Defensive tackle Slater is a load and will shift to the nose when they go to a 3 man front. Defensive end Badger comes off the edge hard. Simmons is Everman's best linebacker and can play side line to side line. Conerback Hill is their best cover man. Safety/rover Darrein Davis is the best athlete and play maker on defense. Everman will sub many different players in and out on this side of the ball.

Special Teams
#34 Duran is the place kicker. Everman will kick it high to about the 20 on kickoffs. He is good from about 35 yards in on field goals. The Bulldogs will run the swinging gate on PATs. The QB is the punter and average for high school. The return teams are very dangerous. Everman really flies down the field on kick coverage. The Jackets will need to be a little quicker on PAT/FG attempts as Everman can get their quickly.

Prediction

Everman has the talent on offense to turn one missed assignment into 6 points. I fully expect the Bulldogs to break a few long ones, but Everman's inability to keep defenses honest through the air will make it difficult for them to maintain drives against the Jackets. Stephenville will make it hard for Everman to rotate players on defense when they go up tempo and will score enough for the Stephenville victory.
Stephenville 35 Everman 24

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Open @ Big Spring Steers (2-0): The Steers roll in this one after two 1 point wins to start the season
Big Spring 98 Open 2

Brownwood Lions (1-1) @ Liberty Hill Panthers (1-1): Brownwood hits the road for the first time this year. LH had an impressive win over 5A Brenham last week 49-47. The Lions have definitely improved from a year ago but not enough to take down a very good Panther team at home.
Liberty Hill 35 Brownwood 21

Snyder Tigers (1-1) @ Monahans Loboes (1-1): Monahans had a touchdown called back last week in the last 2 minutes of their game against Big Spring. The Tigers routed 3A Slaton 64-9. The Loboes are a very good team especially at their house.
Monahans 35 Snyder 7

Graham Steers (2-0) @ Abilene Wylie Bulldogs (1-1): This is the game of the week in region 1. I believe Graham is just a step down from last year and Wylie is an emerging title contender. The Bulldogs put the state on notice after this game.
Wylie 35 Graham 21

Stephenville vs. Lubbock Cooper

Stephenville faced their first true test of 2014 when they faced off against the Everman Bulldogs. It took the Wardogs about 3 series to adjust to the excellent Everman speed. The Bulldogs busted 80 yard and 40 yard touchdowns in the first quarter. The Jacket D shut them down after that with the exception of a 4th quarter drive after Stephenville's first punt of the season. The offense rolled on and senior signal caller Jarrett Stidham was outstanding rushing for over 200 yards, passing for over 200 yards, and accounting for 4 touchdowns. Linebackers Josh Gillespie and Garrett Crew led the team in tackles with 11 a piece. The play of the game had to be Kaegun Williams 6 yard touchdown run in the 2nd qtr. The Jackets were facing 4th and 2 from the 6 yard line, the sophomore running back took the handoff and was met at the line of scrimmage by 2 Everman defenders. Williams busted through the tackles and into the endzone.

It is the "Heart of Gold" game this week as your Jackets take on the Lubbock Cooper Pirates at Tarleton Memorial. The Pirates are 1-2 on the season coming off a loss to cross town rival Wolforth Frenship 34-14. Please note the game is on Thursday with an 8 o'clock start time. ESPN will be broadcasting the game so set your DVR Jacket fans.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Cooper's offense is centered around their gifted QB Ehlers. They will run multiple sets mainly out of shotgun. The Pirates are fairly balanced run vs pass. Ehlers is a dual threat and Cooper's leading rusher. The top play maker is TE/WR Evan McHugh. McHugh is a physical presence at 6'3 220 that can run. The right side of the offensive line has the most experience.

Defense
The Pirates base out of the 4-3 defense. They like to run various stunts and blitzes up front. Defensive end #99 Vinson is a high motor guy that plays to the whistle. Cooper's best line backer is #28 Mendez. Mendez totaled 113 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 FR, and 3 INT's last year.

Special Teams
The Cooper special teams are solid for high school football.

Prediction

Cooper has given up big rushing yards in their 2 losses to Canyon Randall and Frenship. The Jackets put up over 550 yards of offense on the Pirates last year in the Qtr. Finals. The early season returns on both teams leads me to believe the Jackets win big.
Stephenville 49 Cooper 14

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Hereford Whitefaces (1-2) @ Big Spring Steers (2-0): The Steers roll in this one after their bye week
Big Spring 49 Hereford 14

Alvarado Indians (0-3) @ Brownwood Lions (1-2): Brownwood continues to improve after they gave a good Liberty Hill team a tough game. The Indians appear to be down this year. The Lions even their mark at 2-2 in what should be a very good ball game.
Brownwood 24 Alvarado 21

Snyder Tigers (1-2) @ Sweetwater Mustangs (3-0): This is a rivalry game and sometimes those don't play out like you think. The Mustangs have been impressive while the Tigers have struggled against better competition.
Sweetwater 35 Snyder 14

Birdville Hawks (1-2) @ Abilene Wylie Bulldogs (1-2): Wylie lost last week to a very good Graham team 18-7 and was held under 100 yards of total offense in the process. Birdville picked up their first win beating Trophy Club Nelson 49-42. Nothing like getting your offense back on track against a Hawk team that has allowed over 40 points in every game this season.
Wylie 42 Birdville 28

Stephenville vs. Alvarado

The Jackets were handed their first loss on season by a good Lubbock Cooper team. The Pirates kept the Jacket defense off balance all game by mixing up the run and pass. Cooper racked up 537 yards of offense, 288 on the ground and 249 through the air. Free safety Jon Clark Giddings led the team in tackles with a whopping 18. Kaegun Williams had an outstanding offensive performance with 108 yards rushing, 134 yards receiving, and 3 touchdowns. Williams also had the Jacket play of the game with an electrifying 38 yard touchdown reception.

Stephenville closes out non-district play this Friday as they take on the Alvarado Indians at Tarleton Memorial. The Indians come in at 0-4 on the season losing last week to Brownwood 29-15. Don't let that record fool you as the Indians have been very competitive in every game with two of those losses by less than a touchdown..

Let us take a look at the match up.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Alvarado runs the "Katy I" on offense. It is an under center I-formation set. They will run pro , twins, slot, and power formations out of it. The Indians will run the football about 75% of the time. The work horse in this offense is the tailback and the Indians have two good ones. Hendrick is a returning starter that had over 2500 yards last year. Hendrick's backup Morriel is the leading rusher by 20 yards. Hendrick is the quicker of the two while Morriel at 205 pounds is the power back. The Indians like to run behind their big experienced left side where they average 275 pounds. Receiver Bowman is their play maker in the passing game averaging 16 yards per catch.

Defense
Alvarado will base out of the 3-4 defense. The Indians will bring different looks and pressure all game. Linebacker Raburn is the best player on this side of the ball and Isclaw is their best defensive back..

Special Teams
#13 Robles is the place kicker, the Indians like to utilize the pooch kick on kickoffs. #16 Bowman is the punter. The coverage and return teams are solid for Alvarado.

Prediction

I expect the Jacket defense to be in bad mood this Friday after getting it taken to them on national TV at home. The offense should be just as focused after missed opportunities to win the game in the 4th quarter last week.
Stephenville 42 Alvarado 14

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Big Spring Steers (3-0) @ Graham Steers (3-1): The Battle of the Steers, Graham was handed their first loss of the season last week by the defending champ Argyle Eagles 35-27. Big Spring meanwhile handled Hereford 41-14. This is one of the top games in all of 4A this week. Graham doesn't lose at home very often.
Graham 34 Big Spring 31

Brownwood Lions (2-2) @ Burkburnett Bulldogs (1-3): The Lions win their 2nd straight this week comfortably.
Brownwood 42 Burkburnett 21

Snyder Tigers (1-3) @ Midland Greenwood Rangers (1-3): The Rangers have struggled to score points in their last 3 games only managing a touchdown in each. The Tigers should have enough to overcome a struggling Greenwood.
Snyder 28 Greenwood 14

Liberty Hill Panthers (3-1) @ Abilene Wylie Bulldogs (2-2): Wylie will definitely be battle tested by the time district rolls around as they take on one of the top teams from region 4 in 4A D1. I am going with the home team by a touchdown.
Wylie 28 Liberty Hill 21

Stephenville @ Brownwood

Stephenville finished off non-district play beating the Alvarado Indians 55-20. It was a 2 touchdown game at the half . Tthe Jackets asserted their dominance in the 2nd half, scoring 27 points while allowing one touchdown to the Indians. The Jacket offense was hitting on all cylinders amassing 602 yards of the offense. This was a season high for Stephenville up to this point. Kaegun Williams was a beast with 321 yards of total offense and 2 touchdowns. The defense allowed 403 yards to the Indians but after their first possession in the 2nd half, Alvarado was held scoreless resulting in the 5 touchdown victory.

After a decade the "Battle of 377" is once again a district contest. The last time these two rivals faced off in district was 2003, a 28-21 Brownwood victory. In that time frame the Lions and Jackets have played 6 times, 5 non-district games and 1 playoff game. Stephenville is 5-1. The Lions come in with a 4-2 record beating Springtown 30-7 last week. Stephenville and Brownwood have two common opponents this season, Gatesville and Alvarado. Brownwood beat Gatesville 35-0 and Alvarado 29-15.

Let us take a look at the match up. I apologize I do not have complete roster and statistical info on Brownwood

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Brownwood will run a multiple set offense with good balance between the run and pass. The offensive line is good with 4 returning starters and talented tight end Hayden Day. Bertrand does a good job at QB completing 64% of his passes. The Lions have a pair of super sophomores leading the team in rushing and receiving. Harley Price is the leading rusher averaging 5.3 yards per rush. Receiver Conner Howard is the top play maker on offense drawing similar comparisons to another standout Lion receiver that wore #8.

Defense
The Lions will base out of the 4-3 defense. Trenton Carlton is Brownwood's best defensive lineman. Linebacker Dalton Simmons led the team in tackles last year with 111. Returning safety Grant Lewis is an enforcer in the middle of the field. The Lions will run several different blitzes and stunts up front.

Special Teams
Junior #13 Abraham Oviedo is the place kicker and punter. Oviedo has been very good this year going 4 for 4 on field goals with a long of 34 and 18 for 18 on extra points. Oviedo will also employ the rugby style punt.

Prediction

This is a tricky game to predict. The Lions have been a team of two half's, struggling in the first and playing very well in the 2nd. If Brownwood can put together a complete game they can play with anyone in this district. Stephenville teams under Coach Gillespie have a history of hitting another gear once district starts. I believe the fans will be treated to a very good game in the 74th edition of the "Battle of 377". I predict the game will be close through 3 with Stephenville putting it away in the 4th.
Stephenville 42 Brownwood 24

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Big Spring Steers (4-1) @ Snyder Tigers (2-4): Big Spring is coming off their first loss of the season a 1 point defeat to rival Andrews, 43-42. Snyder is going to have a long district season. Steers win big.
Big Spring 56 Snyder 21

Abilene Wylie has a bye this week.

Snyder @ Stephenville

The Jackets defeated rival Brownwood 40-21 in the 74th edition of "The Battle of 377". The Lions held the Stephenville running game in check but could not stop Stidham and Co. through the air. The senior signal caller totaled 370 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 80% completion percentage. Justice Wisener had an impressive game for the Wardogs with 10 tackles including 5 for a loss.

It is Homecoming 2014 for Stephenville and the Jackets welcome the Snyder Tigers to town. Snyder comes in with a 2-5 record and 0-1 in district play. The Tigers were taken to the wood shed last Friday 49-6 by Big Spring.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Snyder runs a true spread and will throw the football about 60% of the time. Maxfield is a dual threat and a key cog in their running game. Munkres is Maxfield's top target. Also watch out when starting corner back #25 Reneau comes in the game. He has some wheels and was last year's district champion in the 100m.

Defense
The Tigers base out of the 4-3 defense. They have struggled on this side of the ball against good competition. MLB Hernandez is a returning starter and their best player in the front 7. Snyder has speed at corner back with Reneau and Munkres. Juarez is another returning starter patrolling the middle from his free safety spot.

Special Teams
#42 Chance Reneau is the place kicker and punter. The Tigers will utilize the pooch kick as well as the deep kick on kickoffs. Snyder has had some consistency problems in this phase of the game.

Prediction

Snyder is having a down year and will struggle to win a single game in district. The Homecoming crowd goes home happy with a big Jacket victory.
Stephenville 56 Snyder 14

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Brownwood Lions (4-3) @ Abilene Wylie Bulldogs (4-2): Wylie is coming off their bye week. The Bulldogs have sputtered some on offense but have been solid all year on defense. Brownwood can play with anyone in this district if they can put together a solid 4 quarter football game. Something the Lions haven't been able to do against good teams. I picking the Bulldogs in a hard fought game at their house.
Wylie 28 Brownwood 20

Big Spring has a bye this week.

Stephenville @ Big Spring

Stephenville secured a trip to the playoffs for the 24th time in the last 25 years by defeating Snyder 49-16. The Jacket offense totaled over 500 yards of offense for the 6th time in 7 games. This time it was the rushing attack that led the way for the Jackets as Stidham and Williams combined for 218 yards on the ground with 3 touchdowns. The Stephenville defense also had some bright spots with 3 turnovers including their first interception of the year by safety Jon Clark Giddings. It was also the first time the defense scored a touchdown as sophomore linebacker Dustin Lundy had a scope and score from 55 yards out on a fumble return. For the second straight game linebacker Justice Wisener led the team in tackles with 11 including 4 for a loss.

The intensity gets turned way up this week as Stephenville travels west to take on the 5-1 Big Spring Steers. You can bet after realignment the Steers had this one circled on their calendar. The Jackets trailed the Steers by 2 with only 37 seconds left in the 3rd round of the playoffs. Stephenville had 1 timeout and needed to go 68 yards for the win and they did just that as Stidham found tight end Brock Morrison on a 21 yard flag route to take the lead in dramatic fashion. You better get there early as the Big Spring Steers and Stephenville Yellow Jackets battle for control of district 3-4A.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Big Spring is a spread team that likes to run the ball. The Steers have about a 60/40 run/pass split. Big Spring returned 7 starters off of last years dynamic offense and the results have shown. It all starts and stops with the Steers outstanding quarterback Tobyn Tannehill. Tannehill is a true dual threat. He is averaging over 9 yards per rush and nearly 16 yards per pass completion He puts tremendous pressure on a defense. The Steer offensive line is big and experienced. Joining Tannehill in the backfield is sophomore running back Preston Alexander. Alexander is a big physical back averaging 7 yards per rush. Tannehill's favorite target is senior receiver Matt Yanez. Slot back Hill is a threat rushing and receiving with 364 yards rushing and 306 yards receiving, averaging 24 yards per reception

Defense
The Steers base out of the 3-4 defense. Big Spring replaced all but 2 starters on this side of ball and it has shown against better competition. The Steers have struggled some against the pass. Their best defensive lineman is DE Schneider. Wigington is a two way starter and their top linebacker on defense.

Special Teams
The Steers special teams is very dangerous. That is because their best player Tannehill is also the place kicker and punter. Tannehill is above average as a place kicker and employs the rugby style on punts. The punt return team will need to be very disciplined.

Prediction

This one has all the makings of a classic. You have two of the top teams in the region battling for a district championship. Then you throw in the revenge factor and this match up gets down right juicy. I expect both teams to have much success moving the ball on offense. Just like last time it could come down to who has the ball last. The Jackets win a shootout.
Stephenville 52 Big Spring 49

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Abilene Wylie Bulldogs (5-2) @ Snyder Tigers (2-6): It will be another long night for the Tigers as I expect the Bulldogs and their defense to dominate from the opening whistle.
Wylie 42 Snyder 7

Brownwood has a bye this week.

Stephenville vs. Abilene Wylie

The regular season finale is upon us Jacket fans. It feels like it has been a month since Stephenville last played. I guess coming off an emotional loss makes the bye week feel that much longer. But the bye week couldn't of come at a better time for the Jackets. They needed time after losing one of their leaders Jarrett Stidham to a broken hand, and to work on the defensive side of the ball. Here we are going into the district finale with the district championship on the line. The initial goal of winning district is still attainable for the 2014 Yellow Jackets, but they will have to do it against one of the most talented teams in our district and region, the Abilene Wylie Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have ran roughshed through 3-4A winning every game by at least 30. Wylie is anchored by a tremendous defense and punishing ground game. The Jackets will need to play their most complete game of the year to come out on top.

Stephenville will need to beat Wylie by more than 12 points to win the district through tie breaker system in 3-4A. That is assuming Big Spring beats Brownwood. If Brownwood wins then Stephenville simply needs to just beat Wylie by any margin. I expect Stephenville to play well this Friday. It is senior night in their last home game, and the Jackets are 9-0 after a bye under Gillespie and Co.

Let us take a look at the match up.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Wylie will run multiple sets out of the spread. The Bulldogs are a run first offense with enough passing to keep teams honest. The offensive line is not the biggest but very good as a group. #81 Johnston is the work horse. He is a powerful down hill runner that is averaging over 9 yards per carry. The Bulldogs complete about 50% of their pass attempts. They do not have a true go to receiver but spread the ball around very well in the passing game. Wylie plays several players both ways and will sub in players often.

Defense
This is the side of the ball where Wylie's bread is buttered. The Bulldogs have been stout all year against many offensive styles. They base out of the 3-4 defense and like to bring the attack to the opposing offense. Wylie is anchored by a pair of outstanding defensive ends #89 Baker and #88 Gilliam. Both players are big, rangy, and get to the ball in a bad mood. The Bulldog linebacking core is solid. They fly to the football and tackle very well. The secondary has shut down opposing passing attacks all season and have accounted for 10 interceptions on the year. The Wylie defense as a whole has 22 take away's this season.

Special Teams
Wylie has 2 place kickers, #40 Quigley left footed and #11 Hanna right footed. Quigley has taken the majority of the PATs. The Bulldogs have used 3 different punters this year with #14 Daniell getting the most snaps. The coverage and return teams are well coached and solid.

Prediction

Wylie is playing the best football of any team in 3-4A right now. Stephenville will need to play a complete game with minimal mistakes. Wylie has shown some propensity to turn the ball over with 24 giveaways on the season. The Jacket defense will need to be much improved from their last outing and take advantage of any mistakes Wylie might make. Offensively Stephenville will need to establish the run to take pressure off of Chavarria. I believe with all the factors surrounding this game Stephenville pulls the upset.
Stephenville 28 Wylie 24

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Brownwood Lions (5-4,1-2) @ Big Spring Steers (6-2,2-1): The Steers were humbled last week by Wylie 49-6. Brownwood started a little slow but finished strong beating Snyder 49-14. Brownwood is dealing with the injury bug and Big Spring has had their pride hurt. I think the Lions make a game out of it but in the end Big Spring takes it.
Big Spring 42 Brownwood 28

Snyder has a bye this week.

Stephenville vs. Decatur

The Jackets put on a gritty performance last week against the district champion Abilene Wylie Bulldogs. The offense fought hard and had some chances but could not punch it in against the best defense Stephenville has seen to date. The Jacket "D" had one of their best performances of the season. Giddings led the team in tackles with 14 and DE Justice Bethea had one of best games with 8 tackles, 3 for a loss, with 1 sack. .

Stephenville will take on an unfamiliar foe in the first round as they face off against the Decatur Eagles. Decatur is 7-3 on the season and placed 2nd in district 4-4A. The Eagles took the district champion Graham Steers to the brink, losing in overtime 54-48. These two have only faced each other twice in their history, 1961 and 1962 with each winning one.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
The Eagles run a spread offense very similar to what we saw against Cooper and Big Spring. They are a very balanced offense running and throwing. Quarterback Myers is good athlete who leads the team in rushing and passing. Myers' go to target is receiver Durdon. Payton McAlister does a little of everything for the Eagles. He has over a 1,000 yards rushing and nearly 600 yards receiving with 26 touchdowns.

Defense
Decatur bases out of the 3-4 defense, and like most 3-4 defenses the Eagles will not be afraid to bring pressure. They have had their struggles at times on this side of the ball as well. They have given up a lot of big plays but have also caused 27 turnovers (14 INT and 13 fumbles). Defensive end Cedrone is their best down lineman. He leads the team in TFL with 12, and also has 3 sacks, 1 INT, and 3 fumble recovers. Inside linebacker Vaughn is the leading tackler with 104 on the season.

Special Teams
#12 Jorge Martinez is the place kicker. Martinez has made 93% of his PATs and is 2 of 3 on FG's with a long of 28. The Eagles will utilize the pooch kick on kickoffs. The QB Myers is also the punter. Myers averages 36 yards a punt.

Prediction

Decatur is a good football team that is playing it's best ball of the season. The Jackets will need to bring their A game to come away with their 23rd Bi-district victory. I look for Stephenville to build of their strong defensive effort from last game to propel them to the 2nd round.
Stephenville 35 Decatur 28

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Brownwood Lions (5-5) vs. Graham Steers (8-2): Graham is one of the best teams in region 1. The Lions have been very competitive since moving up some young talent. These two know each other well. I expect Brownwood to give Graham a stiff test early on with the Steers pulling away late.
Graham 42 Brownwood 28

Big Spring Steers (7-2) vs. Gainesville Leopards (4-6): Gainesville has the talent to cause the Steers some problems, but in the end Big Spring will be to much.
Big Spring 35 Gainesville 21

Abilene Wylie Bulldogs (8-2) vs. WF Hirschi Huskies (3-7): This is the biggest mismatch in the first round between these 2 districts. The Bulldogs roll.

Stephenville vs. Lubbock Estacado

Man, what a game last week! The Jackets playoff game with Decatur was an instant classic and easily one of the top Stephenville games I have ever witnessed. The effort and determination showed by both programs was incredible. I left that game feeling ecstatic that my Jackets won but also felt for Decatur. That was a tough loss for them in such a hard fought game. There were so many players that made big plays it is hard to single anyone out. But Kaegun Williams was just money all night with 357 yards of offense, 7 touchdowns, and the winning 2 point conversion pass. Any time your back has that kind of game you have to give kudos to the offensive line. One may look at the 64 points Decatur scored and think the defense had a rough game. You have to look deeper than just the final score. The defense held a very potent Eagle attack to 38 points in regulation. That is 10 points less then Decatur scored on Graham who has one of the best defenses in the region. The Jacket "D" also defended 115 plays in regulation and overtime. I would not be typing this article if it were not for the huge stops on Decatur's two 2 point conversion attempts in the 3rd and 4th overtimes. Junior linebacker Zoey Kendall led the team with 17 tackles, and Adam Saenz had 16 tackles with 11 solo. Let's not forget the 2 huge field goals Mike Fick made to send the game into overtime.

The Jackets will travel to the familiar confines of Shotwell Stadium in Abilene this Friday to take on the Lubbock Estacado Matadors in the area round of the 4A division 1 playoffs. The Matadors come in with a 9-2 record and fresh off a thrashing of Clint Mountain View in the first round, 68-7. These two have only met twice in their history in 1992 and 1994. Both games were playoff games with each winning once.

Let us take a look at the match up.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
For the 2nd straight week Stephenville will face a spread offense where the QB is the leading rusher and passer. QB Tennison is a dynamic athlete playing QB. He is very dangerous running the football averaging 9 yards per carry. Running back David Smith is the next leading rusher with 711 yards and 8 touchdowns. Kenaris Jackson is Tennison's go to target averaging 20 yards per reception. The Matadors are a run heavy team with about 70% of their offense coming via the run. Estacado is completing 48% of their pass attempts but their average per completion is 18 yards. The offensive line for the Matadors has plenty of size and run block well. Estacado averages 2 turnovers per game.

Defense
Estacado bases out of the 3-4 defense. Defensive end Cooper is their best down lineman with 55 total tackles including 46 solo. Linebacker #10 Willard is the best defender for the Matadors. Willard averages nearly 11 tackles per game and is tied for the team lead in sacks with 2. Estacado has a very athletic secondary that has totaled 14 interceptions. The Matadors have been vulnerable to good rushing attacks.

Special Teams
The kicking game for Estacado has not been very good. #11 Garcia is the kicker for PAT's and he has converted on just 42% of his attempts. They have not made any FG's this year. The QB Tennison is the punter and has also kicked off 49 times. Tennison is averaging 15 yards per punt. The return game on the other hand is very dangerous for the Matadors. Tennison is the deep man on both punt and kickoff return. Tennison averages 34 yards per kickoff and punt return.

Prediction

The Jackets should have an advantage up front offensively and be able to move the ball with consistency. Defensively Stephenville will need to win first down and put the Matadors in predictable passing situations were they are not near as comfortable. The Jackets will have a big advantage in special teams. I believe the Jackets put this game away late by 3 scores..
Stephenville 42 Estacado 21

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Big Spring Steers (8-2) vs. Andrews Mustangs (10-1): These two met earlier in the year at Big Spring with Andrews edging out the Steers 43-42. Big Spring is finally health in the offensive line for the first time in several weeks. I believe the Steers get revenge and set up another possible rematch with the Jackets in round three.
Big Spring 49 Andrews 42

Abilene Wylie Bulldogs (9-2) vs. Levelland Lobos (5-6): The Lobos have an explosive offense but give up quite a few points as well. Not a good combination against an elite defense. Wylie rolls, the only question is will the Bulldogs give up more than a touchdown? It has only happened once in the last 5 games.
Wylie 42 Levelland 7

Stephenville vs. Big Spring

The Jackets survived another shootout against Lubbock Estacado with the triumphant return of Jarrett Stidham. Stidham looked like he hadn't missed any time at all with over 500 yards of offense and accounting for 9 touchdowns, 3 rushing and 6 passing. Kaegun Williams had another game with over 100 yards rushing and receiving. Williams' 3 touchdowns gave him 49 for his Jacket career tying the all time touchdown mark for Stephenville. The offensive line was very impressive giving Stidham all day to throw the ball and opening up huge running lanes. Defensively the Jackets forced 3 turnovers and stopped three 2 point conversion attempts.

Stephenville returns to Shotwell Stadium this Friday to take on the Big Spring Steers for the 3rd time in the last 2 seasons. Big Spring won in district play 64-57 on the legs of slot back Hunter Hill who ran for over 300 yards and 6 scores. Hill only had 13 rushing attempts in this game scoring nearly every other time he touched the ball. This is also the game where Stidham broke his hand on the 4th play from scrimmage. This game has all the makings of another playoff classic.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Big Spring is a spread team that likes to run the ball. The Steers have about a 60/40 run/pass split. It all starts and stops with the Steers outstanding quarterback Tobyn Tannehill. Tannehill is a true dual threat. He is averaging over 8 yards per rush and nearly 16 yards per pass completion He puts tremendous pressure on a defense. The Steer offensive line is big, experienced, and healthy for the first time in several weeks. Joining Tannehill in the backfield is sophomore running back Preston Alexander. Alexander is a big physical back averaging 7 yards per rush. Tannehill's favorite target is senior receiver Matt Yanez. Slot back Hill is a threat rushing and receiving with 1032 yards rushing and 486 yards receiving, averaging 11 yards every time he touches the ball

Defense
The Steers base out of the 3-4 defense. The Steers have struggled against the pass. Their best defensive lineman is DE Schneider. Wigington is a two way starter and their top linebacker on defense. Big Spring has added more speed to help the defense from our last outing. Tannehill has been playing free safety and Hunter Hill at linebacker.

Special Teams
The Steers special teams is very dangerous. That is because their best player Tannehill is also the place kicker and punter. Tannehill is above average as a place kicker and employs the rugby style on punts. The punt return team will need to be very disciplined.

Prediction

These two teams have played exciting games in their last 2 meetings. They know each other very well. It is very basic in my opinion, Jarrett Stidham will be the difference this go around.
Stephenville 42 Big Spring 35

Now for the rest of the 3-4A picks.

Abilene Wylie Bulldogs (10-2) vs. Graham Steers (10-2): These 2 met earlier in the year with Graham winning 18-7. Both teams are very strong up front on the defensive side of ball. You will see the polar opposite in this game versus the Big Spring-Stephenville game. The first to 20 wins. I believe that will be Wylie this go time around. The Bulldogs are playing the best football of the teams left in region 1.
Wylie 28 Graham 21

Stephenville vs. Graham

Stephenville as Coach Gillespie stated, had their most complete performance of season last week against Big Spring. The offense tallied over 600 yards for the 3rd consecutive week and the defense forced 2 fumbles, sacked Tannehill 3 times forcing him to throw it away another 6 times, and blocked a punt. It was a complete team effort in all 3 phases. Stidham was spectacular in his 2nd game back from injury accounting for 455 yards of offense and 7 touchdowns. Stidham has accounted for 975 yards and 16 touchdowns in the last 2 playoff games (Brad Keith). Zoey Kendall led the team in tackles with 14 and linebacker Justice Wisener had a big game with 12 tackles, 1 sack, and 3 tackles for loss.

The Jackets return to the quarter finals for the 6th time in the last 7 years. This time around Stephenville will be taking on the Graham Steers who defeated Abilene Wylie last week 20-7. Graham comes in with a 11-2 record. The Steers are trying to make their 3rd straight semi-final appearance, their first in division 1. Graham's only 2 losses came to Argyle 35-27 in week 4 and Big Spring 27-20 in week 5. These two programs have met 33 times with the last one coming in 1997. The all time series is knotted up at 16-16-1. Get ready football fans we are in for another great game in the Texas High School Playoffs.

Key Personnel and Scouting Report

Offense
Graham is a spread multiple set offense much like Stephenville. They are very balanced running and passing making them difficult to defend. They have an outstanding offensive line. Quarterback Landry Turner played against Stephenville last year with Springtown. Turner is completing 64% of his passes and has rushed for over 500 yards and 11 scores. Nick Martin is the straw that stirs the drink offensively for Graham. He is a strong powerful runner with good speed. Turner's top target is senior wideout Todd Parker. Parker is a homerun threat for the Steers. He caught two touchdown passes last week one for 80 yards.

Defense
Graham bases out of the 3-3 stack defense also know as a 3-3-5 defense. The Steers have arguably the most talented defensive line in region 1. Graham is led up front by their division 1 defensive end Dustin McWhorter. McWhorter has 93 total tackles on the year with 7 sacks. Opposite McWhorter at the other defensive end spot is Colton Langley. Langley is tied with McWhorter with 7 sacks as well. The Steers best linebacker is Bohner Cottongame who leads the team in tackles with 111. The Graham secondary has been ball hawks but also given up some big games through the air. The Steers have 23 interceptions on the year, with both cornerbacks and free safety accounting for 15 of those.

Special Teams
#84 Ivan Carrillo is the primary place kicker. He is making 76% of his PAT's and is 3 for 3 on FG's with a long of 24. The Steers will employ the pooch kick or squib kick on kickoffs. #18 Buchanan is the primary punter and he is averaging 36 yards per punt. Graham's kickoff return team has been very good with 4 kickoffs returned for touchdowns.

Prediction

It should be like looking in a mirror when these two teams look at each other. They both have the same type of athletes that know where the weight room is located. They are both well coached, do not know the word quit, and have plenty of recent playoff experience. The Stephenville offense is playing at a crazy level right now and I believe that will be the difference in the game.
